This beautiful replica Sperm Whale Tooth was a part of the collection for President John F. Kennedy. The original tooth is still part of his collection at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, Massachussetts. The original reproduction of this Antique Tooth was originally made by Artek. President Kennedy was an avid collector of antique scrimshaw.
The front of the Replica Whale tooth has an engraved a frigate running before the wind under full sail on front. The back is engraved in black and red image a woman in a full length dress with a checkered apron holding a tiny parasol in her right hand and handkerchief in her left. It was used as a bookend in the Oval Office.
Most of the scrimshaw during this time period where done by whaleman that weren't artist. They would take pictures from newspaper's and/or magazine and place the image on the whale tooth. They would use a sail needle and place dots around the picture to trace the artwork. This style of engraving is called stippling.
This beautiful replica Sperm Whale Tooth weighs 18.84 ounces. The dimensions are 8.50" x 3.16"x 2.42". The item number is SP - 04.
The resin scrimshaw piece is hand etched on corian, which cuts like ivory. We then make a mold of the original piece and do an open cast pour of our resin mixture. The pieces are removed from the mold and sanded and inked.
