Product Overview

This beautiful replica Small Sperm Whale Tooth with a scrimshaw etching of the Whaling Ship, the Lagoda.  It is a part of the collection at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.  The title of this tooth is called "Lagoda".  The design is of the famous whaling ship, the Lagoda. The original was etched over 100 years ago.  The reproduced tooth is currently made in our office in Fall River, MA.

The replica Sperm Whale Teeth is finished to give it the appearance of an antique tooth.  It also had ridges and edges similar to that of our real tooth.  This beautiful replica Sperm Whale Tooth weighs 1.62 ounces.  The dimensions are 1.53" x 3.09"x 1.00".  The item number is SP - 02S.

The original Lagoda was a merchant ship built in 1826 in the Wanton Shipyard on the North River in what is now Norwell, MA.
Originally intended to be named "Ladoga after Lake Ladoga in Russia, the letters "d" and "g" were accidentally swapped and, due to superstition that correcting the name would bring bad luck, she remained the "Lagoda".The ship's frame was constructed of oak and she had 3 masts and weighed 340 tons.

Weston employed the Lagoda for about seven years as a merchant vessel in trade with northern European ports. On February 25, 1833, Weston sold the ship to Boston merchant William Oliver.  In 1841, she was purchased by Jonathan Bourne Jr. of New Bedford and converted to a whaling ship. The refit included the installation of a trywork.  Which is an on-board pair of tryouts used to render the whale blubber into whale oil.

The Lagoda was one of the few ships to escape the Whaling Disaster of 1871.  This was when  40 ships whaling in the Arctic  late in the season were surrounded by ice. 33 of the ships were trapped or crushed, but the Lagoda was one of the 7 ships that narrowly escaped, and it carried 195 of the 1,219 survivors to safety to Honolulu, Hawaii.

The resin scrimshaw piece is hand etched on corian, which cuts like ivory.  We then make a mold of the original piece and do an open cast pour of our resin mixture.  The pieces are removed from the mold and sanded and inked.

We believe that serving nature is one of the commissions that we as humans have been given here on earth.  We wish to lend our resources to those charged with protecting elephants from poaching for their ivory.

On a monthly basis we donate to organizations whose purpose to protect the elephants and other species throughout the planet.  We focus our donations on organizations that put the money to good use and have a low overhead. With the majority of incoming funds going back to saving the elephants!
