This is an amazingly detailed 22K Plated Gold Nantucket Basket Pendant with a replica scrimshaw Seashell design. Inside the basket is a mini penny. The basket on it's own has the following dimensions, .78"x .48"x .77". The pendant holder add .22" x .85". Each pendant weighs .31 ounces. All the pendants come with an 18" gold chain. The item number is GNB 161S.
This Nantucket Lightship basket pendant is made in pewter and was plated in 22k Gold. These beautiful baskets are similar to what is seen on the Netflix hit, Sirens
Nantucket lightship baskets, characterized by their rattan staves, cane weavers, and wooden bases, originated on the island's lightships in the mid-1800s. Initially, these baskets were a way for lightship crewmen to pass the time during long deployments and were primarily utilitarian. Over time, the baskets evolved, becoming more refined and sought after as souvenirs of Nantucket.
Keeping with the tradition of a penny in the basket. A penny is placed inside the basket to symbolize good luck. Each of our basket pendants have a mini penny inside to carry on the tradition.
The artwork was done by Linda Layden has been making beautiful works of art in the scrimshaw field for over 40 years. Originally a hobby that became a full time job. Her work can be found in gift shops, galleries and museums across the world. The seashell is of a scallop shell.
The resin scrimshaw piece is originally hand etched by Linda Layden. We make a mold of the original piece and do an open cast pour of our resin mixture. The pieces are removed from the mold and sanded and inked with Indian Ink.
We believe that serving nature is one of the commissions that we as humans have been given here on earth. We wish to lend our resources to those charged with protecting elephants from poaching.
On a monthly basis we donate to organizations whose purpose to protect the elephants and other species throughout the planet. We focus our donations on organizations that put the money to good use and have a low overhead. With the majority of incoming funds going back to saving the elephants!
